Every release.
What changed in MidMando, version by version. The iPhone and iPad app and the Mac app number their versions separately; both are one free download.
Version 3.2.2
15 October 2026Choose which skills to focus on, find your level with real exam questions, and Flashcards that teach new words.
- Focus & skill levels. Choose where to put your energy among reading, listening, handwriting and typing. A skill you focus on comes up more often; the others are asked less, never dropped. Each skill can also be unlocked up to its own level.
- A new placement test. Find my level asks which skills to test, then climbs each one on questions from the practice papers: recordings, reading, and gap sentences written by hand or typed. Each skill keeps its own result.
- Flashcards that teach. A new word can be practised, or passed if you already know it. A word you have met turns over to show its answer, then you say whether you remembered it. Short tests come between, and every character is one card with all its meanings. A card per meaning is a setting.
- More practice papers. Thirteen more papers for HSK 1 to 4 which between them use every word of each level, both read and heard, and over 160 more pictures in the papers. A readiness card shows how you have done in each section.
- What’s new. A card at the top of the Library with what changed in each version, back to 2.1. Hide it and it stays in Settings.
- Meanings in exam order. Where a word has several meanings at one level, the one the HSK tests comes first: HSK 1 class 1 now teaches 贵 as “expensive”.
- Skills named in English. Reading, Listening, Handwriting and Typing are named in words everywhere, instead of 读 听 写 打.
- Share with a friend. A QR code for the MidMando page, and a button that sends the link.
Version 3.2
9 October 2026MidMando now follows the new HSK 3.0 exam, and you can sit practice papers.
- The HSK 3.0 syllabus. The course follows the HSK 3.0 exam syllabus, the one the papers use from December 2026: 11,000 words across HSK 1–9. Your progress moved with you, and words the syllabus dropped stay in your Outside HSK list.
- Practice papers. Mock exams for every level, HSK 1 to 7–9: listening with its recordings, reading, writing and speaking, with explanations in English, a pinyin switch and feedback on your answers.
- Four skills on every word. Every word shows how well you read it, hear it, write it by hand and type it — and the HSK page can show your course by any one of them.
- Flashcards. A swipe deck of the words you can read. Right if you know it, left to open its page.
- Translate from the camera. Translate reads Chinese from the camera or a photo: a menu, a sign, a page.
- Chit Chat with 布布. Everyday small talk at your level, beside the guided chats.
- Stencil a wallpaper. Write any chengyu, or a phrase you translated, with a brush and keep it as your wallpaper.
- The Writing tab on iPad. Whole sentences by hand with Apple Pencil, a notebook and a writing course.
- The Quick fire widget. A new word on a timer, and tapping either widget opens that word.
- Every district. Provinces & Cities lists every district, with bookmarks and notes for places.
- Pinyin your way. Type the pinyin instead of choosing it, and hide pinyin once a word is learned.
- Other ways to say it, and cleaner word splits. Other ways to say it now covers every word in the course, and translations split Chinese into words more accurately.
Version 3.1
19 September 2026MidMando is on the Mac, and there is a new game.
- MidMando for Mac. A free download with this app. Select Chinese anywhere on your Mac, press Command-Shift-M, and read it. Same words, same progress.
- Pairs. Match every hanzi to its reading, using only words you have already met. It has a widget of its own.
- Sync while you study. Changes from your other devices arrive while the app is open, instead of waiting for the next launch.
- Sound that survives a call. Playback carries on after a phone call, or another app taking the sound.
- A proper end to a lesson. The end of a lesson shows your score and the words you missed, instead of just a DONE button.
- Every word opens its page. Tap a word in a translation or a lyric and you get its full page, the same one search gives you.
- Bookmark from the top. A word’s page has a bookmark button at the top; press it again to take the bookmark off.
- 布布, easier to talk to. Type your answer straight into the box, and meeting him fits on an iPhone screen. He sits at the top of the Library.
- HSK gets its own tab. HSK Levels has its own tab in the middle of the bar, and Songs have moved into the Library.
- iPad. Turning it mid-class keeps the class open, and Split View lays out properly.
- New songs and a new saying. Two new songs, including 离骚 — 2,300 years old and the hardest thing here — and a new saying, 相见恨晚.
Version 3.0
11 September 2026A new app from the ground up.
- A new look. One quiet design across every screen, with Chinese set in serif and everything else out of the way.
- A daily plan. Open the app and today is ready: the word of the day, your next class, your bookmarks, the words you met outside the course and a review of what is slipping. Pick how long it should be.
- One card, five skills. Every word is asked by reading, meaning, tone, listening and writing, in an order that follows how well you know it.
- Radicals and components. A new section with 514 pieces and 201 radicals from the national standards, and every character in the app taken apart into its pieces.
- Poems and provinces. 127 classical poems with pinyin and a plain English line for each, and all 34 provinces with the character on the number plate.
- Translate. Paste anything and get the Chinese, the pinyin, the English and the words you have not met yet, ready to learn.
- Search everything. Words, idioms, poems, songs, places and your own history from one box.
- Bookmarks. Bookmark any word, anywhere, and it joins your plan.
- Achievements and streaks. 159 achievements and a calendar of every day you studied.
- Teacher. Keep your classes, students and attendance.
- iCloud for everything you make. Bookmarks, pinned idioms, mix-ups and your song library sync too.
Version 2.2
13 August 2026Your progress now follows you between your devices.
- iCloud sync, rebuilt. Your answers, levels and streak move between your iPhone and iPad through your own private iCloud.
- Everything you collect syncs. Review words, known words, mix-ups, pinned idioms, saved slang, your music library and 布布 now reach your other devices too.
Version 2.1
12 August 2026The biggest update yet.
