From the maker
Alistair Kenyon-BrodieMade MidMando
My goal is to make the world’s best Mandarin learning companion — completely free.
I spent years in China learning through speaking and listening, but I realised I would not know how to write a message even when I knew how to say it — simply because I did not know which exact hanzi stood for the word I wanted. And so MidMando was born.
In the beginning I built the app with a friend, Vishal Singh — at first it was just a way to learn the hanzi and pinyin for the words I already knew. Hats off to him; he did an amazing job.
The app has grown enormously since then, with far more features and functionality.
Every hanzi is tracked through your extended use of the translator, the music and chat features, and the different class types. You can inspect any individual hanzi anywhere in the app — its sentence examples, its radical and component breakdown, its stroke order, and your own level of usage alongside every encounter you have had with it.
I hope you have as much fun learning with MidMando as I do. It has been a delight to build the app I always wanted.
If you have any feedback, or a suggestion for making it better, please email me at midmando.support@gmail.com. I would be glad to read it and put it to use.
我们可以一起变得越来越好。加油!

Why free

The best Mandarin app should not cost anything.

Most language apps charge you monthly and then slow you down so you keep paying. MidMando is made by one person who wanted the app he could not find. It is free, with nothing to unlock. The only thing I ask in return is that you tell me what would make it better.

Learn a little every day.

Open the app and the day's plan is ready: the word of the day, the next class in your course, the words you bookmarked, and a review of whatever is slipping. Twenty minutes, done.

Never lose a word.

Every answer you give updates that word's schedule. Miss it and it comes back tomorrow. Know it and it comes back in a month. The app remembers so you do not have to.

Read anything.

Paste a message, a menu, a lyric or a sign into Translate. You get the Chinese, the pinyin, the English and a list of the words you have not met yet, ready to learn.

The course

Every HSK word, from 1 to 9.

11,323 words across every HSK level, grouped into short classes of about fifteen words. Each class has nine parts: learn, quiz, type, sentences, listening, tones, translation, write and a test. You can see every character you have met and how well you know it, so your Chinese visibly grows.

11,323HSK words in the course
5,187Idioms and sayings
127Classical poems
66Songs

Beyond the textbook

The things textbooks leave out.

Radicals and components, 5,187 idioms and sayings, 127 classical poems, the 34 provinces of China, slang and texting, and 66 songs to sing along to. All of it built into the same memory as your course, so a word you meet in a poem counts towards the one in your class.

Tell me

I want to hear from you.

This app is built one learner at a time. If something confuses you, if a word is wrong, if you wish it did something it does not, tell me. There is a Report a bug button on almost every screen of the app, and a feedback form on this site. I read every message and most of the app's best features started as one.

On your Mac

Chinese on your screen, read in a keystroke.

Select Chinese text in any app — a browser, Mail, a PDF — and press ⌘⇧M. A small panel comes forward with the sentence split into words, a reading under each and the English, then it is gone when you press Escape. MidMando never steals focus, so the page you were reading keeps its place, and everything you look up is waiting in your history on your phone that evening.
